OOO October's Outta the Drawer Originals, part V--The Finale
October is almost over and with it's departure comes my last entry for OOO October's Outta the Drawer Originals. I hope it inspire at least one or two of you to unearth some old stories or come up with some new ones.My finale is inspired by my yearly Halloween costume--a night fairy. It's more a concept than a reality. I imagine them to be the fairies that are in charge of rules, even if fairy rules are different than our own.Siduenya
OOO October's Outta the Drawer Originals
I interrupt the regularly scheduled FTBC for a special offering. FTBC will return next month.I've been on a alliterative kick lately (for proof see my book website's newest page, Fourth Fridays for Fantasy Foodies) and today is no different. I read a blog post that recommended putting original work out in the world--a frightening prospect for any writer. But the more I thought about it I realized the timing couldn't be better. October holds eerie appeal, with Halloween looming. Nothing's scarier than revealing untested work. Perfect for doing something scary and brave.I encourage other writers to do the same with the title, OOO October Outta the Drawer Originals. Post short stories, flash fiction, and poetry with a spooky/atmospheric bent. Post as often as you can and consider it practice for NaNoWriMo in November. Here's my first offering:
Bone WindA girl who loses her mother is adopted by a force of nature. She quickly learns that nature cannot be contained.
Early Inspiration
The first stories I told as a kid were ghost stories. You know the ones I'm taking about. The mysterious drip that came from nowhere. The woman with a ribbon around her neck. The hook in the car door. The Lady in White. The list goes on and on, but they were stories we told each other at slumber parties, at recess, and especially at Halloween.
As an adult, I look back at those stories with a hint of longing. Longing for the time when Halloween was atmospheric and eerie. Now it feels more repulsive and gory. Scary yes, gruesome no. Whatever happened to The Wolves of Willoughby Chase or The Watcher in the Woods? If you don't know what I'm talking about, please look them up as examples of stories with real atmosphere.Being a writer has made me more proactive. If I feel there's an absence of something I want to read, instead of complaining I write it. So, despite being a rather mediocre poet for some reason Halloween puts me in mind to rhyme. All Hallows Evening
Quiet creaking
Gentle shivers
Paces seeking
Lighted slivers
*
Moonlit pools
Carry secrets
Hungry ghouls
Hide in thickets
*
Unsuspecting
Wander through
Anticipating
Only you
*
Finding barely
What was sought
Knowing faintly
You’ve been caught
*
Night of Hallows
Veils thin
Until the morrows
Stay in!
